Inside Our Yogyakarta Coffee Workshop: A 6-Chapter Journey

Culture and History Published 5 November 2026 ARIEF AULIA 2

Six chapters, one big map of Indonesia, 50+ coffees and a V60 of your own. Here is exactly what you learn in our small-group coffee and chocolate workshop in Yogyakarta.

a professional buyer

Cupping is the method coffee buyers use around the world to compare beans. You pick five coffees and slurp each one from the spoon, loudly, to spread it across your whole palate. Then you write down what you taste and notice how different each coffee is from the others.

If you are with friends or family, it turns into a friendly competition for the sharpest palate. Your barista is the judge, and the winner takes home a special prize.

Chocolate gets the same treatment. You smell more than five Indonesian chocolates from five different areas, choose two to cup, and try cacao beans along the way.

Chapter 5: Grind, pour, repeat

Next your barista shows how grind size changes the cup, with coffee ground to different textures so you can see and feel the difference. Then comes the V60, the pour-over loved by specialty cafés worldwide. Your barista demonstrates each step, from water temperature to pouring technique, and you repeat it until the cup is yours. Prefer chocolate? You can prepare a traditional-style hot chocolate with authentic Indonesian cocoa instead.

Chapter 6: Your cup, your prize, your souvenir

Sit back and enjoy the coffee you made while the winner is announced. Your barista takes photos and videos of your session throughout and sends them to you on WhatsApp afterwards, free of charge. You also choose your own souvenir: two 50 g packs of coffee or chocolate to take home.

Why we teach it as a curriculum

Because coffee is easier to love when it has a story. The map gives every cup a place, the species and processing explain the flavour, cupping gives you the words, and brewing lets you put it all into practice. It was designed by Kin, a Yogyakarta guide since 2015, and it works for complete beginners and experienced coffee lovers alike.
