Borobudur and Prambanan deserve a place on anyone's list when visiting Java. Both are monumental, historic, and genuinely worth seeing in person.
The problem is that many trips stop exactly there. Off the bus, up to the courtyard, photograph, back on the bus.
What gets left behind nearby
Within an hour of both temples there are silver-working villages where metal is still shaped by hand, backyard herb gardens whose contents are drunk daily, and kitchens whose recipes were never written down.
Why this matters
The temples tell you about Java's past. The daily life around them tells you about Java now — and that part rarely makes it into an itinerary.
Balancing the two
This does not mean skipping the temples. Quite the opposite. What we suggest is leaving room between those landmark visits to stop and actually talk to people.
Lunch at a local home between Borobudur and Merapi, for instance, is often what our guests remember most — more than the temples themselves.
