Jamu and Eco-Printing: Two Traditions That Start in the Backyard

Culture Published :date 25 July 2026 2

In many Javanese homes the backyard is not simply a garden. It works more like a medicine cabinet and a toolbox at once.

Jamu: drunk, not displayed

Turmeric, ginger, temulawak, and kencur grow side by side and get used interchangeably as needed. There are blends for aching muscles, for colds, for keeping stamina up. The proportions pass down through habit rather than books.

Eco-printing: patterns that come from the leaf itself

Teak leaves, lanang leaves, and certain flowers leave colour behind when pressed and steamed together with fabric. No synthetic dye is involved at all.

Because every leaf has its own shape, no two cloths ever come out identical. That is what keeps people absorbed in it.

Why the two are often combined

The raw materials overlap and both demand the same kind of patience. A combined session lets you see one plant from two sides at once.
