Eco-Printing & Jamu Making Cultural Workshop
Two Javanese skills in one session, both starting from plants that grow in the yard.
In the eco-printing half, you arrange leaves and flowers on cotton fabric, roll it up, then steam it until the patterns transfer into the fibres. No two results are ever identical, and the cloth is yours to take home.
In the jamu half, you grate fresh turmeric, ginger, and temulawak, press them, then balance the taste with palm sugar and tamarind. Our host explains what each blend is usually drunk for in Javanese households.

Itinerary
Arranging leaves on fabric
Choose leaves and flowers from the garden and arrange them on cotton fabric however you like.
Rolling and steaming
Roll the cloth up tightly and steam it until the leaf patterns transfer into the fibres.
Blending jamu
Grate fresh turmeric, ginger, and temulawak, press them, then balance the taste with palm sugar and tamarind.
Unrolling the cloth
Unroll your eco-print while drinking the jamu you made. The cloth goes home with you.
